Comprehensive Education Partnership and Support Policy

Objective:

To enhance educational outcomes and support for students in Tulsa by fostering collaboration between city and educational institutions, ensuring local control of public education, improving safety, and addressing the needs of both students and educators.

1. Strengthening City-Education Partnerships:

  • Establish a City-Education Task Force comprising representatives from the Tulsa Public Schools, local government, community organizations, and business leaders.
  • Develop joint initiatives to support educational programs, resource allocation, and community engagement.
  • Promote city-sponsored educational events, workshops, and programs that align with school curricula and community needs.

2. Preserving Local Control of Public Education:

  • Affirm the commitment to maintaining local governance over public education decisions.
  • Ensure that city policies and initiatives respect the autonomy of local school boards and educational authorities.
  • Facilitate regular dialogue between city officials and school leaders to address and align on mutual goals.

3. Enhancing School Safety:

  • Increase funding for hiring additional crossing guards at busy thoroughfares near schools.
  • Prioritize placement of crossing guards at intersections identified as high-risk by traffic studies and school reports.
  • Implement a community awareness campaign to promote pedestrian safety and awareness around schools.

4. Addressing Stray Dog Issues:

  • Launch a targeted animal control program to manage and reduce stray dog populations, focusing on areas with high student foot traffic.
  • Collaborate with local animal shelters and rescue organizations to provide education and resources on responsible pet ownership.
  • Enforce stricter leash laws and animal control ordinances to prevent strays from impacting school attendance.

5. Expanding After-School Programs:

  • Develop and fund after-school programs tailored for at-risk youth, including tutoring, mentorship, and recreational activities.
  • Partner with local non-profits and community organizations to deliver comprehensive support services.
  • Encourage schools to establish or expand after-school clubs and activities that engage students in positive, productive ways.

6. Attracting and Retaining Teachers:

  • Work with philanthropy and local real estate developers to offer housing incentives such as grants, subsidies, or discounted housing options to attract and retain qualified teachers in Tulsa.
  • Create a teacher recognition program to acknowledge and reward excellence.
